Today is day 1 of my 30 day commitment to seeing live music everyday. I see a lot of music but I think I can step it up and see at least one live set a day, every day. No matter what. I intend to be deliberately diverse, seeing things that I would not normally see, what people visiting New Orleans may not normally see, mixed in with my favorite bands I see on a regular basis and also classic New Orleans music, some of which I've never gone out to see and some of which I see biking down the street on my daily rides. I'm exhausted after this first day so I'll tell you what I did and I'll come back in the next few days and talk about it in greater detail and hopefully add some pictures. I started at 11 am over at St. Augustine Catholic church for Treme's 200th anniversary Second Line extravaganza, as expected lots of brass bands and social clubs. Saints game (woohoo) but left early to catch Irma Thomas at Nazareth church sing Gospel (yes, Irma Thomas. And yes, wow). Irma was there trying to raise money and awareness for the church that is still struggling to get back on their feet after being in 5 feet of water due to Hurricane Katrina and the federal floods that put the city under water in 2005. Inspired, I went home for doggie time (not before crashing a porch party on Louisana, feeling good i joined the dance party going on to Keith Frank's Haterz... I really like this song). Couple hours later I rallied and biked to WWOZ to chill with Micheal Dominici on the Sunday Kitchen Sink/Whats New show, Dominici, whose New Orleans Music show I have been doing on Tuesdays for the last bunch of months now, had on Helen Gillet with her Cello. Helen is great, and will be on the New Orleans Music show on Tuesday to play a record she made at Never Records very recently, but tonight she improvised on her cello and cracked jokes. Then I biked to Frenchmen to catch Super Nice Bros (soooo FUN)! and King Louie's Missing Monuments (awesome as usual)! Biking home passing by the Spotted Cat and I think Khris Royal was playing. Sounded great! Can't see everything. I missed Warren Storm and C.C. Adcock at the Blue Nile Tonight. Again. Can't see everything. And I'm dead dead dead tired. I will have to come back and talk more about what I've seen on day 1. 30 days of Live Music. Day 1. Done.
