Located on Elysian Fields, the park anchors Frenchmen Street, known for its incredible music venues. Originally developed as part of the tract of land owned by the Marigny de Mandeville family in the early 1800s, Washington Square Park has been a gathering and meeting place for generations of families. The park is a peaceful place, lined with benches for relaxation and a beautiful spot to meet up with friends and enjoy the shade of the historic oak trees. You can find street performers playing music or juggling in and around the area. It also occasionally hosts special events such as festivals, art markets and concerts.

2-6pm | “Death to fossil fuels!” An afternoon of food, music, art, and connection.

Local legend James Andrews and his brass band will lead the funeral procession. Indigenous and other cultural funeral traditions will feature in the funeral.

This free and family-friendly event will coincide with the March to End Fossil Fuels in New York City, where Gulf South community leaders will sound the alarm about fossil fuels, liquefied natural gas, carbon waste injection, and other dirty tricks endorsed by the Biden and Edwards administrations.

The celebration will bring together the climate, faith, arts, and social justice movements in a shared, inclusive space to envision the world we all deserve.

2:30 - 3:00 pm: Speakers

3:00 pm - 3:30 pm: Breakout group discussions of climate justice and related themes, such as labor, faith, and race.
