'OZone Email Newsletter for March, 2008

'OZone Newsletter Dear Listener,

What a year it has been so far. In January, WWOZ won an Offbeat magazine “Best of the Beat Award” for favorite radio station in the New Orleans area. Next came our Spring Membership Drive at the beginning of March, where we heard from over two thousand folks and added over seven hundred new members to the 'OZ family.

We continued on a roll in March as we won an ESKY, Esquire magazine’s award for best internet radio station. Now April is looming and along with the azaleas and trees blooming here in the city, we enter our busiest time. We will be broadcasting from two stages at the French Quarter Festival from April 11th to the 13th and then we will be broadcasting live from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May. If you haven’t ordered your Brass Pass or Over Pass for the Fest, you’d better get one soon as we are beginning to run out.

If that is not enough, we will present and broadcast live our 20th annual Piano Night benefit on Monday, April 28th. It is a night of piano magic, and tickets have just gone on sale, so don’t delay as this event normally sells out. We have plans for other events and broadcasts, so keep checking the WWOZ website for updated information.

Yours in making a difference,

WWOZ Show Host Keith Hill"Three Questions"

Our Monthly Feature Where We Find Out More About Our Show Hosts Past and Present

Our three questions this month are for current Monday "New Orleans Music Show" host Keith Hill and former longtime blues and "New Orleans Music Show" host John Sinclair, who now lives in Amsterdam. Both Keith and John gave some interesting answers to our three questions.

Keith has fond Jazz Fest memories of the Sun Ra Orchestra back in the late Seventies, while John’s favorite Jazz Fest moment revolves around the early WWOZ broadcasts of the festival. Be sure to read more of their answers to our three questions on the ‘OZ website.

Jazz Fest and the WWOZ Brass Pass

It won’t be long for the much anticipated 2008 edition of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. WWOZ still has a limited number of Brass Passes left. The Brass Pass is your magic ticket in and out of the Fest and gives you entry to our hospitality area at the Fairgrounds. You can find out where you will need to go to pick up your Brass pass on the 'OZ web site.

WWOZ Piano Night

WWOZ has a special benefit at the House of Blues on Monday April 28th: a celebration of the piano players of the past and present in the city. A night that goes on forever, with one legend after another, Piano Night is an event you won’t want to miss this Jazz Fest. For more information about tickets, go to the Piano Night page on our web site.

Special Friends at Keene College

Special Friends at Keene CollegeWhen people outside of the city decide to throw a New Orleans-related party, the music source just has to be WWOZ. New Hampshire resident Mimi Morton found a great way to celebrate our culture and educate at the same time.

Read more about it on the WWOZ Web site. We Love to hear from you so, keep ‘em coming.

Spinach and Artichokes, New Orleans Style

Artichokes are a popular vegetable in New Orleans. In the Spring, young artichoke plants can be found at many of the nurseries around the city. A favorite of many New Orleans folks is the mixing of artichoke hearts and spinach into a casserole.

Here’s one of the best we’ve found, shared by longtime WWOZ member Hild Creed. Check out Hild’s recipe for Spinach and Artichoke Casserole on the 'OZ web site, along with other recipes we’ve collected.
