Tank & the Bangas put the best of New Orleans’ contemporary creativity on the world map with their happy, collaborative, and unique sound, which blends elements of soul, rock, hip-hop, and funk with skillful musicianship and fresh songwriting. Tarriona “Tank” Ball met other members of the band at an open mic in 2011, and began performing locally soon after.
Then came the Tiny Desk. Tank and the Bangas won the 2017 National Public Radio’s Tiny Desk Contest with a feisty tune called “Quick,” and the win brought priceless media attention, a major label contract, and a hefty touring schedule. Three years later, they garnered a 2020 Grammy Award nomination for Best New Artist. They have released three studio albums, the 2013 “Think Tank,” 2019’s “Green Balloon,” and the most recent 2022 release, “Red Balloon.” While there have been several personnel changes, most notably the departure of singer Angelika “Jelly” Joseph, who is pursuing a solo career, Ball and the core group of Bangas – Joshua Johnson on drums, Norman Spence II on bass, keyboards, and guitar, and Albert Allenback on alto sax and flute – continue to wow crowds with their unique and infectious sounds.
