WWOZ has partnered with Indywood Cinema for a series of music documentaries on the second Sunday of each month this spring. June's feature is "Latcho Drom," showing on Sunday, June 14, 2015 at 7:00pm.
"Latcho Drom" is a European film that traces the route of Roma people from India through the Middle East and into Europe through real scenes of Roma people playing their rhythmic music and dancing. Flamenco and other variations on Gypsy music are seen in relation to the culture from which they sprang in this passionate and stunningly photographed documentary. The film, though not well-known in the US, won the "Uncertain Regard" award at the Cannes Film Festival when it was first released in 1993. It's well-regarded for its beautiful imagery and evocative tracing of the Roma people's path, musically and geographically.
Indywood is located at 628 Elysian Fields in New Orleans.
