For the past 37 years, La Source Ancienne Ounfo – A New Orleans based Vodou society – has celebrated the Day of the Dead/Fet Gede (“Geh-day”) with an annual Vodou ceremony to invoke the Gede. It is soothing and reassuring to know that our Dead are not gone, that we can come together in community to honor and visit with them. In return, our memory of the Dead keeps their spirits alive and present. This year, on November 1st, 2017, the traditional celebration and remembrance will take place in the lobby of the New Orleans Healing Center. THE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC! Happy Hour featuring cocktails by The Spotted Cat and Day of the Dead Market from 5:30pm-7:00 pm; Ceremony for Gede from 7:00-10:00pm; Pot Luck supper from 10:00-10:30pm; procession to Universal Garden to feed the Dead with prayers for the Dead from diverse traditions at 10:30pm Please wear white with a purple headscarf, or black and purple for Gede. Bring a dish (not a blond) for he people, and an offering for the Dead or Gede. Gede’s tastes tend towards peppers, flat breads, rum, cigars, goat stew, crosses, grave-digger’s tools, black cock feathers, skeletons, sunglasses with one lens, hot Creole foods, money, the colors black, mauve, and white…Or you can bring something that your ancestors or loved ones enjoyed in life.
