All voices welcome! Join us in a traditional African Song workshop facilitated by Janet "Sula Spirit" Evans! It will be a powerful interactive session of call and response, unison and harmony and windows into the mysteries of the Orisha through traditional Yoruba songs which she has collected in her masterwork of spiritual art (book and CD) entitled "Spirit of the Orisha".
A student of the Orisha since 1985, Janet “Sula Spirit” Evans is a singer, songwriter, author, artist, birth doula and priestess. In addition to a Bachelor of Arts degree with distinguished honors in African Studies and English Literature from Rutgers University, Sula Spirit has traveled extensively throughout Africa and the Caribbean gathering songs and inspiration along the way. She is an initiate of the Shrine of Ipohema in Ghana, West Africa, who has studied Akan, Ga and Ewe traditions since 1992 after her initial entrée into the mysteries of the Orisha by way of the Yoruba tradition. A priestess of Mami Wata, Nana Sula offers her sacred services through the Temple of Light, Ile de Coin-Coin, in New Orleans’ upper 9th Ward. In addition to her solo projects, many know and love her voice from the ensemble Zion Trinity, who not only salute the Orisha in song but also put on a kicking Reggae show!
