'OZone Email Newsletter for June, 2011

'OZone Newsletter

Dear Listener,

Did you hear the WWOZ live broadcast of Roy Hargrove from the National Mall, on Sunday, June 12? It was part of WWOZ's incredible live coverage of the DC Jazz Fest, which also included a live performance the night before by Bobby McFerrin and the Afro Blue Reunion Choir from the Warner Theater. Whew! Now that was a musical feast. If you're hankering for more, stay tuned. We're working on additional offerings for later this summer.

While in the nation's capital for the broadcast, WWOZ took the opportunity to express its appreciation to the Library of Congress for its role in rescuing nearly 20 years of irreplaceable live music performance recordings. A terabyte's worth of restored recordings, this collection represents all the wonderful festivals, clubs and music venues from which we have broadcast.

Finally, this just in: Good friend and WWOZ superstar Jellyroll Justice advises us that WWOZ has recently been selected as mid-size Station of the Year by Jazz Week magazine for 2011, as it has many times before! Thanks to all the jazz aficionados responsible for bringing us this honor.

Yours in Spanish moss and hot sauce (ugh!),

Summer Music Festivals

You're probably feeling hot, hot, hot right now, but summer doesn't mean the end of festival season in and around New Orleans. With lots of Cajun music festivals in Acadiana, Essence Fest in New Orleans and even a Swamp Pop festival in Gonzalez, you won't have time to swelter. And don't forget one of our favorites: Satchmo Summerfest. Honoring Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, it is a typical New Orleans event: amazing food, killer trad jazz and die-hard fans.

Help 'OZ End Our Fiscal Year On a High Note

"Every time it rains it rains / Pennies from Heaven / Don't you know each cloud contains / Pennies from Heaven..."

WWOZ's fiscal year ends June 30, and we need 100 new or renewing members to help us keep doing all we do for the New Orleans community and beyond. Membership is our most important source of funding for day-to-day operations, as well as for tasks like volunteer training and web development. It also helps us get more grants to fund big projects like the recent digitization of our massive CD collection. If you've already contributed recently, consider making an additional pledge to help us start the next fiscal year in good shape. And as always, your donation is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Cajun Blackberry Dumplings

Yum, yum. Cajun blackberry dumplings.

'Tis the season for berry picking! With this delicious recipe right from Louisiana Cookin's own Frank Davis, you'll have somewhere to put all those great berries that you picked last weekend up on the Northshore. Check out the link to "u-pick" farms in Louisiana on our site. Just like King Cake, this recipe is great for breakfast, snack or dessert, and you can easily substitute out the blackberries for a mixture of berries. If you like the recipe, then check out Louisiana Cookin' magazine. Subscribe with the promotion code wwoz2011, and they'll donate $5 to WWOZ.
