In Memoriam: Lillian BoutteWe're sad to share news that renowned New Orleans vocalist Lillian Boutte died Friday, May 23 at the age of 75 after battling a prolonged illness. Part of the city’s famed Boutte musical lineage, Lillian was the older sister of singer John Boutte and related to many others in the family’s rich musical tradition. She studied opera performance at Xavier University, but was also singing in clubs at the same time. She recorded and toured extensively with Allen Toussaint and Dr John, often recording at Toussaint's Sea-Saint Studio. Her career and influence stretched far beyond her hometown: for more than three decades, she made her home abroad, performing and promoting the spirit of New Orleans music across international stages. In recent years, as her health declined, relatives brought her back to New Orleans. Family and friends laid her to rest on June 7. |

Second Line Season WrapsTwo more second lines this season: Perfect Gentlemen this Sunday, June 15, and Uptown Swingers on June 22. Keep your eyes on Takin' It To The Streets throughout the summer for non-parading events, school supply giveaways, and more. |

Leslie Cooper Shoutout! Our Tuesday morning Traditional Jazz show host Leslie Cooper has helped WWOZ shine in so many ways from the beginning of the year to the end of the festival season. Leslie is a busy wife, mother, grandmother, founder and director of a summer jazz camp, and a very gifted entertainer. She also volunteers as a substitute show host whenever the need arises, and supports the station’s special events by contributing her time, and her talent as a musician, bandleader and singer. Thank you for coming through for WWOZ, Leslie! We love you! |

Recipe: Gazpacho and other tomato recipesJune is tomato time in Louisiana. Even if you missed last week's Creole Tomato festival, there's still time to enjoy them. Try one of our tomato recipes, like gazpacho, a legacy of our Spanish colonial heritage that hits the spot on a sweltering summer day. It's super delicious, very healthy, and a great way to use tomatoes when they're in season. |
