As the Dirty Dozen Brass Band with Dr. John would tell you, “It’s All Over Now.” However, as is usually the case at the unchallenged greatest music and culture event on the planet, there is way too much to see before 7:00 this eve:
I’m starting the day with George Porter at Acura, Brother Tyrone at Congo, and the Palmetto Bug Stompers across the way at Economy Hall. I like Anders Osborne, Deacon John, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, and the Storyville Stompers in the next wave. Following the Stompers on Jazz & Heritage it’s Mardi Gras Indian and Latin culture time with Big Chief Juan, Freddie Omar, and the Wild Magnolias back to back to back. Other mid-afternoon highlights include the original Meters (awesome!), John Boutte, Buckwheat Zydeco, Don Vappie, the Blind Boys of Alabama and the O’Jays kicking it old school. The spirit of the immortal Louis Armstrong looms large with both Kermit Ruffins in Economy Hall and Dr. John closing Gentilly (Special Guests Alert at this show!) If you have never seen Bobby Lounge, treat yourself and catch him between these two personifications of NOLA music at Lagniappe – you know, chairs and 16 oz. drafts. And there is a certain musical symmetry with Lenny Kravitz opening for Trombone Shorty to wrap up at Acura.
As always, there is so much more so remember to practice the “Walk By”, stroll by the many different stages to see bands that you have never heard of for a song or two. I promise that you will discover something fabulous you never even know existed. And always remember to Go Hear Some Live Local Music!
