WWOZ has partnered with local independent movie theater Indywood for a series of screenings. Coming this Sunday, April 12 at 7pm, is "Ornette: Made in America," a documentary about free jazz pioneer and Pulitzer Prize winner Ornette Coleman. The film features wonderful live footage of Ornette's performances all the way back to his childhood, his experience growing up in segregated Texas, his relationship with his son, drummer Denardo Coleman, and much more.
The film also captures his emergence as a national cultural beacon during a unique time in American history. Contributors to the documentary include William Burroughs, Brin Gysin, Buckminster Fuller, Don Cherry, Yoko Ono, Robert Palmer, and many more.
"Ornette: Made in America" is excellent viewing for jazz aficionados as well as anyone interested in music history and the highly prolific and creative art developed in the U.S. in the 1960s and 1970s.
