WWOZ show hosts have eclectic tastes and personalities, but one thread runs through them all-- a big love for music and New Orleans. They also tend to know where the party's at whether you're looking for brass, blues, jazz, rock, performance art, or anything else.
Interested in what our show hosts are doing or recommending for this New Orleans New Year's Eve? Check out the picks from just a few of them below:
Russell Shelton, host of the Monday early jazz show "The Morning Set" from 6-9am:
"I'm just going to roll with whatever happens, but my potential picks include Dr. John at Le Petit Theatre, Eric Lindell at Circle Bar, Debauche at HiHo, New Mastersounds/Jon Cleary at the Joy Theater, and/or Kumasi at Maison."
Murf Reeves, host of the Monday edition of the New Orleans Music Show from 11am-2pm, has a kid-friendly itinerary as he'll be hanging with his 13-year old daughter:
"We will be heading out to Jackson Square to listen to Honey Island Swamp Band and watch fireworks. If I was solo, I would definitely be checking out Dumpstaphunk at the Joy Theater!"
Andrew Grafe, host of Monday afternoon's "Blues Electric" from 2-4pm has a few good tips:
"While there are many great options (Rebirth at the Howlin Wolf is always a good NYE, Debauche and Slow Burn Burlesque at Hi-Ho should be fun), I gotta go with Dr. John at Le Petit. A living legend who still sounds great in an intimate theatre that also sounds great and is thankfully back in action as a performance space."
Regular listeners of Nita Ketner, host of the Thursday edition of the New Orleans Music Show from 11am-2pm, will know that she's a huge brass enthusiast, so her top recommendation comes as no surprise:
"What better way to usher out the old & bring in the new than Rebirth at the Howlin Wolf!"
DJ Soul Sister, host of Saturday night's "Soul Power" from 8-10pm, is hosting her own (12th Annual!) Soul Train-themed bash at One Eyed Jack's featuring Vintage Soul Train Projections + the Booty Patrol Dancers. The price of admission includes party favors, a champagne toast at midnight, and one of the very best soundtracks in the city to dance your way into 2015. Online advance ticket sales are over, but the club will release a few tix at the door that night for lucky walk-ups. Check out the great myneworleans.com writeup of her New Year's Eve party for more details. "I’m always aiming for positive energy on the dance floor with positive and fun music," she says. 12 years in a row points to big success with that mission.
Where will you be this New Year's Eve? The options are practically endless! What'd we miss?
