Last week I had a "killing two birds with one stone" trip. I got a chance to visit with one of my oldest friends, Leon Anderson and his family, in Detroit, Michigan. And I also got the advantage of attending all four days of the Detroit Jazz Festival. Unlike our very famous New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival-that embraces not only jazz but other musical flavors, such as blues, rhythm and blues, gospel, rock, and zydeco-jazz music clearly dominates the program at the DJF. However, there was a stage that seemed to have, on a much smaller scale, artists representing other genres, including our own soul queen Irma Thomas. Another difference: it's FREE. Except for the final day when it rained, me and thousands more,listened and watched on the banks of the Detroit River (across from Windsor, Ontario Canada) the likes of Sean Jones, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, the Brubeck Brothers, Carl Allen and Rodney Whitaker, the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Hank Jones, Chick Corea, Stanley Clark, and Lenny White, Karreim Riggins, Stefon Harris and Blackout, Louis Hayes and the Cannonball Adderley Project, the Gerald Wilson Orchestra, and the incomparable Wayne Shorter Quartet. Join us Monday, September 14th for recordings from these amazing artists. We'll even play a cut from Gerald Wilson's soon to be released CD "Detroit," a commissioned piece which he performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival. And if there's any time left, we'll hear music from artists who had or will be having recent birthdays, such as Sonny Rollins, Harry Connick Jr., and Cannonball Adderley.
