Victor Goines

Victor Goines is a master of the saxophone and clarinet who is perhaps best known for his many years as a member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, his work with Wynton Marsalis and other jazz luminaries, and as an educator and composer. The New Orleans native has recorded and performed with a Who’s Who of the jazz world, including Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Dizzy Gillespie, Ahmad Jamal, Freddie Hubbard, Ruth Brown, Eric Clapton, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Lenny Kravitz, Branford Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Diana Ross, and Stevie Wonder.

In addition to his robust performance and recording career, Goines is a dedicated educator. He’s served as Artistic Director of Jazz Studies at The Julliard School, and was the Director of Jazz Studies at the Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University for 14 years. He’s also been on faculty at the University of New Orleans, Loyola University of New Orleans, Xavier University of Louisiana, and Florida A & M University. He currently heads the Jazz St. Louis program.

Goines has performed on numerous recordings as both a leader and a sideman, including the soundtracks for three Ken Burns documentaries and the films Undercover BluesNight Falls on Manhattan, and Rosewood. He has composed more than 200 original works, including Jazz at Lincoln Center and ASCAP commissions. One noted collaboration is his recent work with Cuban-born saxophonist Janio Abreu, with whom he’s recorded three albums, including the 2022 release Janio Abreu y Aire de Concierto, Victor Goines & Orquesta de Camara de la Habana.
