Gov't Majik

Gov't Majik describes themselves as “The Dirty South Afro-Beat Arkestra,” and the multi-piece funk band does not disappoint with its high energy, complex rhythmic structures, and epic performances. The band formed in 2005, and returned from the Hurricane Katrina diaspora to develop into one of the city’s more popular and engaging jazz/funk acts. From Tipitina’s to The Blue Nile, Gov’t Majik gets bodies moving with their Afro-Caribbean foundations ad New Orleans flavors, featured on tunes like “Welcome to the Undaground (Ballin…).”

Led by veteran New Orleans musician Bru Bruser, Gov’t Majik takes their musical cues from a swatch of contemporary music ranging from Fela Kuti to George Clinton to OutKast. Their 2023 album, The Bass Age, includes longtime Parliament/Funkadelic alto saxophonist Greg Thomas and the band’s top-shelf personnel, including keyboardist Eduardo Tozzatto, guitarists Raja Kassis and Danny Abel, drummer Jermal Watson and percussionist Luke Quaranta, as well as Bruser on bass.
