Flood relief efforts, 2016-17 second line season kickoff, weekend events + more

1) People throughout southern Louisiana are beginning to rebuild their lives after unexpected heavy flooding inundated the region last week. If you want to help, or are looking for resources to help yourself, family, or friends, check out our Flood Relief: What You Can Do page.

2) The 2016-17 second line season kicks off this weekend with Valley of Silent Men on Sunday! Get the route sheet from WWOZ's Takin' It To The Streets, your source for second line news and information.

3) Monday marks the 11th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. On Sunday, August 28, the 11th Annual Katrina Artistically Revisited Special Multimedia Commemoration Event will be held at the Theatres at Canal Place (333 Canal St.) from 6-11p. This event has happened each year since 2005 "to respectfully remember those who perished and to honor those who survived." This year's event includes showings of Big Charity and The Big Uneasy with Harry Shearer ($5 each), as well as a number of free artistic offerings from Armand St. Martin, Greg Lambousy, Matt Faust, Robert L. Green, Sr., Dr. Rick Lavine's Second Line-Second Life, Mark Sindler photo, Octavia Books, Richard Cahn's Katrina at Bayou St. John, and much more. See nola.com for more info and full schedule.

4) Lots going on this Saturday! The Orpheum is celebrating their one-year anniversary with a show presented by WWOZ featuring Jon Cleary & the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, Amanda Ducorbier, Bryan Batt, and more. Le Petit Theatre presents a special night with Leo Nocentelli as he performs, lectures, demonstrates and engages with the audience on his mastery of the guitar. Other guests include Rockin' Dopsie Jr., Darcy Malone, Margie Perez, Don Bartholomew, drummer Jamal Batiste, and bassist Nick Daniels. The Tipitina's Foundation will be holding auditions for their prestigious Internship Program this Saturday. Selected students will learn under the tutelage of Donald Harrison, Jr. for the 2016-17 school year. Auditions must be scheduled in advance. The program is open for students ages 13-19.

5) This week's new music spotlight landed on talented local songwriter Leyla McCalla and her album A Day For The Hunter, A Day For The Prey. McCalla is a Haitian-American who sings in French, Haitian Creole, and English, and plays cello, tenor banjo, and guitar. Deeply influenced by traditional Creole, Cajun, and Haitian music, as well as by American jazz and folk, her music is at once earthy, elegant, soulful, and witty.
