MediaNOLA, started in 2009 at Tulane, is a project that serves as a portal for histories of culture and cultural production in New Orleans. MediaNOLA works as a collective, partnering archival resources with members of the public, to produce and reflect on the many people, places, and things associated with local culture. An integrative mapping tool on the site allows users to compare sites, people, and objects through time and space from 1600 to the present day.
At the website, you can search by category, topic, or timeline. Sites include hundreds of important historical spots in New Orleans like Congo Square, Audubon Park, the Maple Leaf Bar, Mother-in-Law Lounge, St. Roch Cemetery, and many more. WWOZ, your New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Station, has its own entry, which you can read here. The map, while extensive with hundreds of entries, is still missing some notable spots and events, and it continues to evolve as entries are fact-checked and expanded upon. Content so far has been created mostly by Tulane students as part of their coursework, but contributions from community members are welcomed and encouraged. Community members interested in contributing can contact the project's lead, Professor Vicki Mayer at vmayer(at)tulane.edu.
