In Memoriam: David FreedmanWe're very sad to share that David Freedman, General Manager of WWOZ from 1992 to 2016, has passed away at the age of 80. During his quarter-century at the station, WWOZ grew from a small, struggling station with uncertain finances into an internationally-known institution representing New Orleans music and culture, eventually reaching audiences in the millions via radio, streaming, social media, and video. David was something of a visionary in the digital realm: in 1994, WWOZ launched its first website, and in 1995 it became one of the very first non-commercial radio stations to stream online. He successfully led the station through the considerable upheaval caused by Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath. Mary Cornelius, Guardian of the GrooveWWOZ is deeply grateful for the generous bequest left by Guardian of the Groove Mary Cornelius, Ph.D., who passed away in December following a long illness. Mary spent her professional career finding ways to naturally control pests like termites without harming the planet. She lived and conducted brilliant research in Hawaii, New Orleans, and Maryland, always immersing herself in the local cultures and embracing the natural beauty of each place. Mary loved listening to WWOZ wherever she was, and she was a longtime Brass Passer who attended Jazz Fest every day she could. From those who knew her best: "She was small but mighty, peaceful but powerful, Mary made her actions count." Please consider including WWOZ in your legacy planning. Video: Cyril Neville's Tribute to Big Chief JollyLast April at Chickie Wah Wah, Cyril Neville produced a tribute concert to honor the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Mardi Gras Indian tribe by his uncle Big Chief Jolly (George Landry) in 1974 — and the eponymous Wild Tchoupitoulas album recorded in 1976. Our video team was there and produced a selection of all the songs performed during the Tribute Show that were on that seminal album. |

Tipitina's "Free Friday" SeriesTipitina's free summer concert series is back with another tasty lineup. This Friday, June 14, it's Brass-A-Holics + Sam Price & the True Believers. Other upcoming acts include the New Orleans Suspects, Papa Mali Trio, Sierra Green and the Giants, Honey Island Swamp Band, and many more. These weekly Friday events run through August 30, and they're open to everyone 21+. Doors at 8pm; shows at 9pm. |

Volunteer Profile: Gerald FrenchTwice a week, the leader of the Original Tuxedo Band, drummer Gerald French, cozies up to the mic in the WWOZ studio and brings us "more platter, less chatter." On Thursdays at 2p, it's "Blues with DJ Giant"; on Fridays at 9a, it's Traditional Jazz with the Jazz Police. For Gerald, being an 'OZ host is about family: his uncle, drummer Bob French, was a longtime 'OZ show host, and Gerald's "biggest mission in all" is "to make my Dad [acclaimed vocalist and bass player George French] proud and to honor my grandfather [trad jazz pioneer Albert "Papa" French]. I try to make the audience feel like family." WWOZ is a "place where artists can just walk in with their stuff and get it played. For a lot of us as kids, the first time we ever heard ourselves on the radio was on OZ. There's no place in the world like this. OZ is an oasis for that breeding, for that cultural process. It’s very fertile ground." |

Recipe: Crawfish Etouffee—the Craig Klein WayThis recipe came to us from Craig Klein, a bastion of the New Orleans Trad Jazz scene. It's both a recipe for a Louisiana culinary classic, and a lesson in cooking philosophy: no fair using imported crawfish, and you should be listening to "your favorite music (preferably WWOZ)" while cooking, without headphones or ear buds, since "the food you are cooking needs to be exposed to the music as well." |
