That Sounds Great is WWOZ’s recently published cookbook. Have you seen it? If not, it’s possible you may not, since they’re flying out the door faster than a Drew Brees slant pass. Of course we’ll print more, but probably not before year’s end. Best place to find them now is at the Swamp Shop at www.wwoz.org.
And speaking of year’s end, if you weren’t at last week’s WWOZ Volunteer Party attended by hundreds at Café Istanbul, you should reserve the date for next year’s soirée right now. People are the key ingredient to a great party, and this one totally glowed with good feelings. Mario Abney was the headliner, along with two brothers Yah’el (keyboards) and Yirmeyahu Yisrael (sax), who moved here from Birmingham last February with their father, jazz saxophonist Dr. Lud Yisrael. Gary Washington (bass) and Julian Addison (drums) rounded out the ensemble, and the entire outfit smokes!
The past year has brought other amazing new talents to our city as well: Nayo Jones, whose father, Doc, is a jazz pianist and Mikhala Iversen, known affectionately to her uncle (none other than jazz legend Ben Webster) as “Bigmouth.” Both of these very accomplished singers can be heard around town, sometimes singing with Kermit Ruffins, sometimes singing with their own bands, at Kermit’s Treme-hip Speakeasy Jazz Club on Basin Street, for instance. The party season’s in full swing with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra’s 10th Anniversary celebration at Irvin Mayfield’s Playhouse on the 19th and the Daniel Price Foundation’s annual bash on the 21st, Homecoming for the Holidays at the House of Blues. And while you’re out and about taking in some live, local music, check out the rumor circulating that New Year’s Eve will celebrate the opening of a new jazz club on South Rampart called the Little Gem Saloon.

We appreciate all the volunteers who helped WWOZ Guard the Groove through another year—without them, this Whole Thing would be impossible. So we feted them at our Volunteer Holiday Party at Cafe Istanbul last week, with tons of show hosts, volunteers, staff and friends... Awesome, and they deserved every bit of it and more.

When WWOZ was in danger of drowning after the Federal Flood of 2005, WFMU (of Jersey City, NJ and one of America's foremost community radio stations), dropped us a life raft, without which we would have been off the air for months. Now it's our turn to help. Hurricane Sandy did thousands of dollars of damage to WFMU, canceled a major fund-raiser and generally wrought misery. Sandy may seem like old news, but as we know better than anyone, recovery is a marathon not a sprint...

A huge 'OZ shout-out to the Roots of Music, a New Orleans non-profit that helps at-risk kids through music education, tutoring and mentoring. A favorite marching band at local parades, the Crusaders' excellence earned them a place among the outstanding musical groups from across America performing in the 2013 Tournament of the Roses Parade in Pasadena, California.

This recipe is John Boutte's contribution to WWOZ's cookbook, That Sounds Good! The soup includes carrots, ginger, and coconut milk and the result is delicious and comforting. And once the shrimp prep is done, this soup comes together very quickly and easily. It's filling and substantial and great for December.
