Dear Listener,
Just like the rest of New Orleans, WWOZ is getting out of town during the dog days of August. First, we'll be airing a private party of 3,000 revelers kicking off the Democratic National Convention from the Fillmore Auditorium in Denver on Sunday night, August 24th. The list of performers is legendary. We'll follow this with three more nights of special live performances in Denver. Then we'll be airing a party from First Avenue in Minneapolis for the Republican National Convention on Sunday, August 31st.
In between, we'll be bringing you three glorious days from the Detroit Jazz Festival (Saturday to Monday, Labor Day Weekend). Then, we swing westward to bring you live and direct to the Ocean Beach Jazz Festival on September 7th in San Diego. At which point, we must race back to the Crescent City to bring you the Congo Square Rhythms Fest, Crescent City Blues Festival, Voodoo Fest, Down-By-The-Riverside Concert and the Tremé Gumbo Festival all throughout the Fall.
As our exhausted WWOZ show host and producer, David Kunian, once begged over the air: "Please! Someone come stop us, we can't help ourselves."
Yours in gypsy minions,
David Freedman

The History of WWOZ — the 1980s
As you grow, you often become interested in where you started and the lessons you've learned over the years. Take a trip to the early '80s, to New Orleans when there was no radio station that played the music of the city. This is the is the first in a three-part series on the history of WWOZ.

We Need Volunteers for the Fall Membership Drive!
For the drive, we will need volunteers from Monday, October 6th, to Thursday, October 16th. We'd love to hear from you if you are computer savvy and want to help. We are especially looking for volunteers to staff the phone bank and on-air membership drive co-producers, that second voice that works with the show host on the air. These are fun ways to be part of the magic of our Membership Drives, and to help keep WWOZ going!

August Recipe — Fried Eggplant and Crawfish Tails
There used to be a restaurant in the French Quarter on Rue Chartres called Rita's. It was an old-style place with the windows opening to the street and lots of dark corners to snuggle into inside. They used to make this dish better than any other place, as the crusty fried eggplant topped with succulent crawfish tails in a creamy sauce was to die for. This dish is also offered at Jazz Fest by another vendor, so if you only ever make to town for the festival, make it part of a lunch at the Fairgrounds.
WWOZ Welcomes a New Underwriter
WWOZ is proud to announce that the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living (TFL), an affiliated program of The Louisiana Public Health Institute (LPHI), is a new underwriter for the station. We all know New Orleans is one of the greatest cities on earth. One simple way that we can help preserve our culture while improving public health is by protecting all New Orleanians from exposure to secondhand smoke.
