Be Part of WWOZ History

From WWOZ General Manager Beth Arroyo Utterback: Coming in September, WWOZ will present Festing in Place: The Next Fest Thing, beginning Labor Day weekend. We're busy putting together a world class festival for you to enjoy from your front porch, backyard, or air-conditioned living room (more details below). If you can, we'd love for you to become a Drumroll sponsor. We give on-air shout outs to our Drumroll Sponsors twice daily during Festing in Place, so Ozillians around the world will recognize you as a Guardian of the Groove. As a Drumroll sponsor you'll also be invited to the online Groove Gala Patron Party on Thursday September 3, where Groove Gala performers like John Boutte will join us in the Zoom.

Festing in Place: The Next Fest Thing

During Festing in Place: The Next Fest Thing, a seven-day broadcast stretched over two weekends, September 4-7 and September 11-13, you'll hear rare live sets by Dr. John, Irma Thomas, the Neville Brothers, Allen Toussaint, James Booker, the Radiators, and over a hundred others, including a few real surprises. This is a celebration of how we celebrate in New Orleans, with performances recorded at locations all over the Crescent City through the years: at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Presented by Shell, French Quarter Festival, Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival, classic New Orleans clubs such as Tipitina's and Snug Harbor, WWOZ's own studios, and other locations. So break out your festival gear, and get ready to celebrate the best of New Orleans music in safety and comfort--anywhere in the world!

Volunteer Spotlights: Jennifer Emmons and Mac MacAndrew

Jennifer and Mac, two WWOZ off-air volunteers, were members of the same social circle for years before they met briefly at Jazz Fest in 2011. Then, to their mutual surprise, they met again when they were selected as Krewe of Dreux King & Queen in 2018. Jennifer became a WWOZ volunteer in 2017 while Mac started taking phone pledges during membership drives in the early 1990s. Currently, Mac volunteers as a photographer during special events, while Jennifer is a member of the team of volunteers who expresses 'OZ gratitude by making calls and writing thank-you cards to members. We sincerely appreciate their support of the station as devoted volunteers, and we're thrilled to offer our congratulations: Jennifer and Mac plan to tie the knot this year!

OnlineWire Virtual Gig Calendar

We'll be running the WWOZ OnlineWire, a calendar of virtual gigs, in the place of the regular WWOZ Livewire, for as long as it takes! You can see performances happen on a variety of platforms, mostly social media. We're sharing links when and where we can. Many musicians are offering digital "tip jars" via Venmo or other payment systems during these sets. You can stay in and support live, local music!

Causa Limeña

Causa Limeña.

Recipe: Causa Limeña

This month's recipe, Causa Limeña, is Peruvian comfort food. Another, more descriptive name for this "causa" (from the Quechuan word 'kausaq,' to give life) might be "stuffed mashed potatoes." It's both unusual and delicious, and even better for August, it's a dish that's served chilled, often as an appetizer, lunch, or snack.
