WWOZ Groove Gala Happens September 5Help us guard the groove! Join us in the French Quarter for the 2nd Annual WWOZ Groove Gala on Thursday, September 5. With our partners Dickie Brennan's Tableau and Le Petit Theater, we'll again host this indoor music festival featuring performances by Irma Thomas, Lena Prima, Amanda Shaw, the Storyville Stompers, Doreen Ketchens, Gerald French, John "Papa" Gros and Al "Lil' Fats" Jackson. In Memoriam: Art NevilleVocalist and keyboardist Art "Poppa Funk" Neville passed away on Monday, July 22 at the age of 81. As a founding member of funk legends The Meters and The Neville Brothers, Art Neville was a key architect of the New Orleans funk sound. The WWOZ family sends its best wishes to his family and friends, and our appreciation for the many years of groundbreaking music he gave us. |

Satchmo SummerFest Preview VideosDuring the past week, we've had several local artists preview their Satchmo SummerFest appearances in our studio. Check out video of performances by the Palmetto Bug Stompers, the Garden of Joy, Corey Henry & the Treme Funktet, and the Nayo Jones Experience. Satchmo SummerFest returns to the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint this weekend, August 2-4. |

Award Season UpdateLast Saturday evening, at the 61st Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards sponsored by the Press Club of New Orleans, WWOZ received two first place nods, for Best Use of Facebook and Feature Videography. And last month, the New York Festivals Radio Awards honored us with the Bronze award for Information/Documentary for our Tricentennial Music Moments series. Thanks to those organizations for recognizing our efforts, and thanks to the greatest listeners in the world, whose support makes those efforts possible. |

Show Host Profile: Soul SisterCongratulations to Melissa Weber, the new curator of the Hogan Jazz Archive at Tulane University, effective August 12. A New Orleans native who performs as DJ Soul Sister, Melissa is a two-time Big Easy Entertainment Awards winner and a 25-year veteran of WWOZ's air waves, where she debuted at the age of 18. She's currently earning an M.A. in musicology at Tulane. Catch her show, Soul Power, Saturday nights from 8-10pm. |

Volunteer Profile: Murv GrandersonMurv Granderson has been tuning his radio to 90.7 FM since "almost the beginning," as he puts it. Murv enjoys both listening to and volunteering at WWOZ because it's a one-of-a-kind institution. Murv is an avid listener of all kinds of music, with especially keen interests in jazz and blues. He hears new & intriguing music on WWOZ that he's never heard before, so he keeps listening and he keeps volunteering. Thanks, Murv for all your contributions of volunteer power! |
