MONDAY OCTOBER 26
12 pm - Dr John, live from Tipitina's 1999
What better way to launch our 40-day birthday celebration than with the Night Tripper himself, Mac Rebennack? Dr John was a supporter of WWOZ from our earliest years, and performed live on WWOZ many times, in our studios, in festivals, and in this case at the legendary nightclub Tipitinas, on Saturday January 30, 1999.
Special sponsors of the day are John & Melanie DeMattei
TUESDAY OCTOBER 27
10 am - Danny Barker, live from Memphis 1970
Danny Barker was a friend of WWOZ from the beginning. At one point in the early days, he came by the station with a reel-to-reel tape recording of his 1970 performance at the Memphis Blues Festival, for the station to copy for broadcast use. This is a rare live performance of Danny at his best.
Special sponsors of the day are Cheryl and Pierre Champagne of the 400,000-plus former LSUNO and UNO students
WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 28
12 pm - John Boutte and Uptown Okra, 2002
In 2002, singer John Boutte teamed with the bluegrass band Uptown Okra to record an album. They played together at Jazz Fest on the Lagniappe Stage that year, and later that same day, May 4, 2002, WWOZ broadcast a live set they performed at a private evening party.
Special sponsors of the day are Sunchaser Social Club in Cassville WI
THURSDAY OCTOBER 29
12 pm - Hadda Brooks at WWOZ Piano Night in 2002
Hadda Brooks, the Queen of the Boogie, played WWOZ's Piano Night in 2002, at the age of 85, less than a year before she passed. She visited WWOZ a number of times in her final years, and became friends with show host Michael Dominici.
Special sponsors of the day are New Orleans Hash House Harriers Red Dress Run
FRIDAY OCTOBER 30
10 am - Dr Michael White and Gregg Stafford, live at Tipitina's, 2005
In 2005, Clarinetist Dr Michael White and trumpeter Gregg Stafford, who had played together for more than 20 years, performed at a special evening at Tipitina's honoring the Putumayo record label. Their band included Wendell Eugene on trombone, Herman LeBeaux on drums, Steve Pistorius on piano, Kerry Lewis on bass, and Detroit Brooks on banjo. The set was broadcast by WWOZ.
