History of Carnival Class

4-Part Series | Zoom | Recorded if you can’t attend live | January 8-9, 13-14 | 6pm each class Friends of the Cabildo will be returning its successful Adult History Class: A History of Carnival in 2024 with a 4-week seminar beginning January 15th. Speakers will include historian Dr. Karen Leathem of the Louisiana State Museum, Dr. Kimberly Vaz of Xavier University, Nola.com writer Doug Macash and Carnival Historian Frank Perez. The class will define the origins of Carnival, explore local African American traditions, break down of the history of Carnival satire, highlight the evolution of Mardi Gras Throws and the role of gay carnival. Finally, we will wrap up with a look at “folk” carnival.
