'5 things to know' is a weekly feature highlighting different parts of the WWOZ world that you may have missed this week, including unique WWOZ programming and video, plus New Orleans events, artists, places, features, and more. For the week ending June 24, 2016:

1) The last S&P Club second line parade of the season is this Sunday at 3:30 as the Uptown Swingers step out, starting on Loyola St. Get the full route sheet and more info from ya boy Action Jackson at Takin' It To The Streets.

2) This week's episode of New Orleans Calling is the second part of a two-part special featuring New Orleans boogie-woogie/blues pianist Champion Jack Dupree. Champion Jack's story is hard to track down – there’s no biography, and the twists and turns of his life took him all over the world. Two years in the making, this two-part episode of New Orleans Calling brings together rarely heard pieces of Dupree's life in his own words via extremely rare interviews, a recent discussion with Henry Butler, and extensive research. This is an absolute must-hear for fans of blues and the New Orleans piano tradition. Hear Part 1, which aired last week, here. Part 2 is also available online, or you can hear it Saturday, June 25 at 7a on WWOZ.

3) It's officially summer! To celebrate, The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation is presenting a special free concert called Summer SOULstice, on Saturday, June 25 at 9p. The concert features three of our city's top singers: Germaine Bazzle, Sharon Martin, and Leah Chase.

4) This week's new music spotlight stopped on the Hot 8 Brass Band and their new EP, Can't Nobody Get Down. 2016 has already been a big year for the veteran brass band as they celebrate 20 years and have toured the UK. Tru Thoughts Records produced a 10-minute mini-documentary on the group (view it at the link), and released this 6-song EP.

5) The 'OZ featured video of the week comes from Little Freddie King and his performance at WWOZ last fall. Born in McComb, Mississippi in 1940, Fread E. Martin grew up playing alongside his blues guitar-picking father (Jessie James Martin), then rode the rails to New Orleans during the early fifties where he crossed paths with itinerant South Louisiana blues man such as "Poka-Dot" Slim and "Boogie" Bill Webb whose unique country-cum-urban styles would influence his own. We're fortunate to have him in our studios a couple times a year! Find out more about this "only in New Orleans" bluesman in the mini-documentary below.
