5 things to know for 8/3 - 8/9

Published on: August 2nd, 2018

1) It's Satchmo SummerFest time! New Orleans native Louis Armstrong was born August 4 and the festival celebrating him is going on at outside the New Orleans Jazz Museum at the Old U.S. Mint on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If you can't be there in person, check out our Satchmo SummerFest previews we hosted in the studio over the last week: The Nayo Jones Experience, Charmaine Neville, Mahogany Brass Band, plus Yoshio Toyama live from Snug Harbor. Here's the whole schedule for this year's festival.

A few special festival events to note: the annual Jazz Mass at St. Augustine Catholic Church, featuring Treme Brass Band, on Sunday at 11a, immediately followed by the Satchmo Salute second line parade featuring Zulu, Million Dollar Baby Dolls, Al "Carnival Time" Johnson, Sudan, Fi Yi Yi, Boe Monkey Red, and more. The parade will roll from the church to Armstrong Park, down Rampart and Esplanade to the festival grounds.

The Satchmo Legacy Stage will feature "Three Days of Fascinating Discussions by Renowned Armstrong Scholars." Check that schedule out at the link.

2) The 20th Annual Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame Week starts on Sunday with a kickoff event at the Donald Harrison, Sr. Museum. Other events in the week include a Panel Discussion and Book Signing, and an Honors Breakfast. Get all the details at WWOZ's Takin' It To The Streets

3) It's White Linen Night on Saturday! Sport your best whites and head to Julia Street for some of the best in New Orleans art 2018.

4) Tune in at noon on Monday as we welcome Cha Wa into the studio for a live performance! Check out their performance of 'Ooh Na Nay' at WWOZ in 2017 at the link.

5) The National Underwear Day Parade and its scantily-clad participants return to the streets on Sunday, August 5 at 7p. The parade begins and ends at the Elephant Collective art studio, 3610 Toulouse Street in Mid-City.
