YOU ALREADY KNOW!

We’re late to this party, but would feel remiss in not mentioning it—one of New Orleans’ most visible artists and biggest bounce ambassador, Big Freedia, was honored by City Council with her own “Big Freedia Day” last week, on August 21.

The Queen Diva has brought a previously unseen level of visibility to bounce and its place in New Orleans music and culture through his reality show on Fuse TV, the highest rated original programming on the cable network. The show was recently renewed for a third and fourth season.

Big Freedia also accomplished a unique feat for a musician last fall by setting a Guinness World Record in New York City for “Most People Twerking Simultaneously.”  358 people joined in to set the record that’s now one for the books.

Freedia’s 2014 hustle continues with touring through September and October (including appearances at Tipitina’s on Thursday, September 25 and Voodoo Fest the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 2), work on a memoir and two movies, and, as always, the music. Importantly, he is also planning to launch the Vera Ross Foundation in honor of his late mother. Ms. Ross’s close relationship with her son, as well as her battle with spinal and lung cancer, was featured on Freedia’s TV show.

Freedia’s music, personality, and heart remain entwined with New Orleans as his career continues to open bounce music to new audiences and takes this aspect of New Orleans culture worldwide. A deserving recipient of last week’s honor from City Council!
