The young sensation Gary Clark Jr.
Gary Clark, Jr. is a name you will soon be hearing a lot more of. With a style that mixes the grittiness of The Black Keys and showmanship of Lenny Kravitz, Clark is part of the rocking "new blues" family that was first popularized by The White Stripes in the early 2000s. Only 27, Clark is quickly rising to the top of the ever-evolving American blues genre and was declared "Best Young Gun" by Rolling Stone in June 2011. He recently inked a deal with music industry heavy-hitter Warner Music, and the EP he is now promoting was released last month in anticipation of a brand new LP.
"I don't see myself strictly as a blues player," Clark told Gibson Guitars in early 2007. "Mainly because I was influenced at a young age by people like Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Sam Cooke, and Wilson Pickett. That sort of music was always being played around the house. Plus, I'm an '80s kid, so I grew up listening to Prince and things like that. Still, I think the blues is great art form in and of itself. When I play a standard blues tune, I try to play it as straight-ahead blues-- as lowdown and funky as I know how."
No stranger to large and energetic audiences, Clark is sure to rock the House of Blues in New Orleans on the 11th with his heavy modern blues. He has played with local legends The Funky Meters, and has shared bills with such greats as BB King, Buddy Guy, and Eric Clapton. He won over crowds at the 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival and the 2011 Bonnaroo Music Festival.
