My approach to planning JazzFest: pick a bunch of shows that I absolutely can't miss, then when the night of the show comes around be open to going anywhere and doing anything. That being said, here's the shows I can't wait to see:
Tuesday, May 3: Skerik's Sauce Fest at Hi Ho Lounge. Skerik is the man. This show will feature a bunch of local all-stars and out-of-town acts sure to bend your ears in new directions.
Wednesday, May 4: Jon Spencer Blues Explosion at One Eyed Jacks. I've never seen these guys before, thanks to Aquarium Drunkard for making this show happen.
Thursday, May 5: Femi Kuti and Positive Force at House of Blues. This is the one show I actually bought tickets for in advance.
As for the actual Fest, I hope to get out to the fairgrounds these days:
Thursday, to see Lucinda Williams, the Haitian show on Congo Square stage, and, of course, Maceo Parker with Pee Wee Ellis.
Friday, where it will be a total toss-up between seeing the Mingus Big Band, Arcade Fire, or Willie Nelson.
Saturday, to see Ms. Lauryn Hill, and Sunday for Sonny Rollins.
Happy fest! Here's some lagniappe for ya, its a high school marching band absolutely rocking out on Rage Against the Machine's "Bulls on Parade", hope y'all enjoy:
