After airing our recorded interview with Ray Brown Jr. about the two concerts scheduled for this weekend, we were informed that the concerts have been canceled. This is a disappointment for many music lovers and for Mr. Brown too. Ray, we look forward to a visit in the future. Following is the press release concerning the cancellation: (HOLLYWOOD, CA)—SRI Jazz Records has reluctantly announced the cancellation of the Friends and Family Celebrate Ella’s Birthday tribute concert April 25 in New Orleans at Generations Hall. The event’s goal was to raise money for America’s Wetland Foundation. Citing the withdrawal of its primary sponsor, the label said it had been placed “in the unenviable position” of having to pull the plug on the event as well as the companion free concert in Heritage Park scheduled for April 24 featuring Ray Brown, Jr. and an all-star cast of singers and musicians. “We understand that the economic climate makes it difficult for corporations to express their charitable instincts, so we can’t find fault with anyone because we don’t walk in their shoes,” said Shelly Liebowitz, President of SRI in referring to the last minute development. “This literally comes out of the blue. We’re shocked. It’s a terrible disappointment for us, the artists, crew, our associates in New Orleans and everyone in state and city government who have been so gracious with their time and energy in trying to make this work.” “Despite this setback, we intend to go forward with our plans to work with New Orleans’ creative community developing several projects already underway. New Orleans has, and always will be, an iconic cultural center and we’re committed to doing everything we can to benefit the city and its residents.” Refunds for tickets purchased will be available either at the box office or through www.brownpapertickets.com.

Hmm... Pulling the plug on a benefit event... how corporate. Too bad there couldn't have been a benefit show for the benefit show.

If I find out who the sponsor was, I'll be sure to pull the plug on my support for them. Then again, with my luck, the sponsor was probably "Save the Kittens, Inc." ;)
