I’ve been supporting WWOZ since the beginning. I’ve always felt great about that participation, and the way WWOZ supported the city, starting with local artists, playing their records.

The first real radio support that The Meters had was from WWOZ. I’m old enough to know the importance of a radio station where as a musician, Black or white, you can count on your record being played. I came up when other stations wouldn’t play Black music. WWOZ played our music when no one else would.

Why should people donate to WWOZ? It’s so important for us to have a radio station that cares about the musicians and history of New Orleans. A lot of radio stations do not zoom in on our history, they zoom in on everything other than their personal interest in the city that they’re broadcasting from. WWOZ zooms in on us.

WWOZ means that I live in a city that has radio I can connect with, where I can get my songs played without too much hassle, red tape or filling out forms. It’s a personal relationship. WWOZ knows me and I know them, it’s a perfect marriage that I will never stray away from. I hope it keeps going as long as I’m alive.
