John Mahoney

The John Mahoney Little Band is led by legendary bandleader, arranger, and Loyola professor John Mahoney, and the top-shelf septet offers masterful musicianship and inspiring performances of iconic jazz standards. The Little Band can be heard regularly on the Steamboat Natchez, at the New Orleans Jazz Museum’s Music Fridays, at clubs like Snug Harbor, and at festivals including the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival and French Quarter Fest.

Mahoney has long been affiliated – even synonymous – with jazz education at Loyola University New Orleans – although he has (mostly) retired as Coordinator of Instrumental Music and Jazz Studies and Professor Emeritus in the College of Music and Fine Arts, he continues to teach adjunct trombone and lead both his big and little ensembles. For his Little Band he draws on the talents of saxophonists Rex Gregory and Doug Stone, trumpeter Bobby Campo, trombonist John Mahoney, pianist/vocalist Matt Lemmler, bassist Ed Wise, and drummer Michael Brothers, alongside the captivating vocals of Meryl Zimmerman.  The group’s album, Basin Street, Bourbon Street showcases the band’s talents on favorites such as “Just Found Out About Love,” “Old Devil Moon,” and the title cut.
