Ben Jaffe is impossible to summarize in the space given here. The tuba and double bass player leads the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, is the creative director of the institution, is the Chairman of the Board of the Preservation Hall Foundation, and, as the New York Times put it, is “steward of nearly every other aspect of (Preservation Hall’s) present and future.” The son of PHJB’s founders, the younger Jaffe was raised in the French Quarter amidst some of the most celebrated jazz musicians of our time. He studied music at Oberlin College and returned home to take over the leadership of the club and shepherd its mission to forward the traditional jazz culture. In addition to his many musical contributions, Jaffe has instigated numerous tours, films, collaborations, and educational programs that have stretched across the globe. His impact on the history and future of New Orleans jazz cannot be overestimated.
