The Emperor Has A Hit

Published on: January 7th, 2008

Ernie K-Doe, the late "Emperor of the Universe," has a new hit. One of the hottest commercials during the British holiday season was for a TV ad using the song "Here Come the Girls," a 1970 recording by New Orleans' own Ernie K-Doe.

According to a WWOZ listener in Great Britain, the song was part of a Christmas campaign for a British drug store chain called Boots. The Boots advertising agency says it was an unusual pick for them, as they normally work from a script first and then look for music. In this case, the people behind the campaign liked the song first and wrote the script around it.

The song came close to being a Number 1 Christmas hit in 2007. K-Doe's only Number 1 hit was "Mother-In-Law" in 1961. Ernie K-Doe died July 5, 2001.
