Hello,

My name is Pete Dobbins, an elementary art teacher in McKinney, Texas. I’m also an avid listener of WWOZ online.

I recently introduced some of my 5th grade art students to an hour of WWOZ Traditional Jazz via web stream while they were working on guitar drawings. The drawings are part of observation, shading, and composition skills students learn. Students are encouraged to use a realistic or abstract style when they draw.

The students were a little unsure of the music at first (some had never heard Jazz of any form). But by the end of class they protested when I turned off the music; they were genuinely enjoying the music/art making experience. I wanted to thank WWOZ on behalf of myself and my students for providing access to the wonderful music of New Orleans.  Attached are work-in-progress pictures of some of their drawings.
