Olivia Greene’s 2008 Jazz Fest CD picks
Olivia Greene’s Three Picks for Best Recent Local CDs
The Preservation Hall Jazz Band — Made in New Orleans: The Hurricane Sessions (a CD and a DVD) — Preservation Hall Records
Compiled with love from archival tapes that miraculously survived The Great Flood of 2005, this CD/DVD package is a remarkable testimony to the timelessness of traditional jazz, as well as being some damn fine music.
The Pfister Sisters — Puttin' It On — Mambo Goddess Records
This brand-new Pfister Sisters CD showcases each of the lovely singer’s voices on solo numbers, which I especially appreciate. It makes one appreciate even more the beauty and technical expertise involved in their trademark close harmonies, in which they carry on in the tradition of New Orleans’ own Boswell Sisters.
John Boutté — Good Neighbor — Independent label
This welcome release from John Boutté contains some new versions of songs from previous CDs of his, plus a bunch of tunes we probably have only heard from him live, if at all.
