Monsters From the Id!
In the campy movie, Forbidden Planet, monster movies evolved from an external evil attacking humans to an evil within humans attacking humans.  MONSTERS FROM THE ID could be as scary as giant spiders, creatures from the black lagoon, Frankenstein or Dracula.
Monsters from the id are songs about the monster in YOU!  From songs about dream lovers to fighting fantasies (plenty of Batman songs here).  Look through the song list and e-mail me with your suggestions for other songs from the id.  We'll play 'em if we got 'em.  Here is tonight's musical story:

Chapter One - Forbidden Planet - Monsters From the Id
Chapter Two - Moaning From the Id
Chapter Three - Dream Lover
Chapter Four - Kids Fighting
Chapter Five - Adults Fighting

Bill Cosby
"Mojo Workout"
Partyknuller zum tanzen 2

Bill just gave his talk at the Essence Festival last month about getting your id under control. He uses a race perspective to match his message to his audience but his message is the timeless and universal wisdom of a guy who credits success to keeping your id under control. I hear you Bill and I'm trying. Contrast the video link to Cosby voicing over a cover of Uptight, Outta Sight. On Mojo Workout he showed some talent.
The Beast in Me
"Nick Lowe"
The Sopranos
Wilmoth Houdini
"Moan People Moan"
Calypso Capers
Trailer from Forbidden Planet - part of the inspiration for tonight's radio show. Starring Leslie Nielson and the robot.
Five Jones Boys
"Mr. Ghost Goes to Town"
This is the scene from Forbidden Planet that scared the crap out of me. The audio on this movie is spectacular.
The Sham-ettes
"Big Bad Wolf"

This is an answer song to the Animal's Little Red Riding Hood. Hear the link for the Animals.
Leonard Emanuel
"Old Timey Hollar"
Big Bopper's Little Red Riding Hood
Wild Man Fisher
"Young at Heart"
Rhino Presents
Rhino
Street busker who's voice actually grew on me although moaning might be too grand of a description for Larry's singing. The documentaries I've seen paint a sad picture.
Edith Massey
"Big Girls Don't Cry"
Rhino Brothers Present
Rhino
Edith with that Cougar guy. We're still moaning
Mrs. Miller
"These Boots Are Made For Walking"
Mrs. Miller does something well beyond moaning. Here she is with Jimmy Durante.
Murray The K
"The Lone Twister"

Introducing some band from England. He should have just started singing himself. And isn't Murray the K's hat the current look for that Decatur Street Stroll?
Where the Action Is tv theme song
"Where the Action Is"
Is this Paul Revere and the Raider's version? I've bought old television dance show dvds including Hullabaloo and Where the Action Is from www.earthstationone.com

The Coutours
"First I Look at the Purse"
Shout 2
They're still putting on a show as you can tell from this video.
Jim Dandy
"Hot Pants Girl"
Video is completely unrelated to the music but The Castaway's doing their hit, Liar, Liar is worth watching regardless of its fit.
The Rag Dolls
"Society Girl"
Tin Men
"So Uptown"

Looks like this grainy video is from The Matador during the Tin Men's early days. Was that San Francisco's Jed Paulson on camera?

"Dream Lover"
Surfin with the Astronauts
Video from the movie Surf Party with the Astronauts playing an entire song to some double-groovy dancing.
Royal Fingerbowl
"Fistful of Love"

A video diversion because the Royal Fingerbowl is taking the Dream Lover chapter of tonight's show way out of context.

Urban Soul Ballads
Chris Rose at the Times Pic gave Johnny J some ink recently.

The Novas
"The Crusher"
Rhino Brothers Present

After a 42 year break from singing here are The Novas performing this same goofy song as they are inducted into the MN Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So why did they abandon such an obviously successful career in mid-St. Paul bar tour?
Reverend Billy C. Wirtz
"Grandma Versus the Crusher"
Songs of Faith and Inflamation
The Crusher talking about his favorite topic, himself. My favorite Crusher interviews are when he talks about how the women love him.
Bill Rasmussen and Bob Neumeier
"New England Whalers Hockey Fight"
New England Whalers Victory March
Yep, as part of the Whaler's promotion, they put out this vinyl version of a broadcasted Whaler's fight. The video is of the WHA playoffs. After looking at this kind of promotional material, it is kind of obvious that two hockey leagues wouldn't work.

Lloyd Price
"Carry Me Home"
Lawdy!
With Cosimo's voice in the background. Video of Lloyd with horrible audio so you gotta go buy the music!
Eddie Giles
"Losing Boy"
Sweet Soul Music
Taken from a companion cd released with Peter Guralnick's book, Sweet Soul Music. (I wrote Peter a fan letter after reading this book). I believe the link is to the same Eddie Giles who hiding in plain sight as a preacher in Shreveport, LA and program director KOKA am. The music today is nothing like "Losing Boy." I gotta do a theme on all the Obama music, there is also a Mighty Sparrow song but all these songs try lyricize policy positions and they are difficult listening.
Danny and the Dreamers
"Ask The Lonely"
West Side Soul
There is a huge trove of Chicano Soul that, like the population that created it, remains barely visible to America. Danny and The Dreamers are one of those groups.

Al has a hit with this song. It is catchy enough that I keep humming it during the day. Link is to his web site.
