"The Loving Story" HBO Documentary Screening and Discussion

Thursday, August 11, 2016 - 6:00pm
A screening and discussion of the HBO Documentary, "The Loving Story," based on the heartwarming and inspiring story of Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple who married in 1958 in Virginia and were arrested a few weeks later for violating the state's anti-miscegenation law which banned marriage between people of different races. Next year marks the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Supreme Court ruling that abolished the law. Such laws had been on the books in most states since the 17th century with the last state, Alabama, abolishing the law in 2000. The HBO documentary (2011, 77 minutes) which was released in February 2012 and directed by Nancy Buirski, brings to life the Lovings' marriage and the legal battles that followed through little-known 16mm film interviews and old news clips and still photographs shot for Life magazine. A new film from Focus Features about the Lovings entitled, “Loving,” was widely embraced at this year’s Cannes Film Festival in May and is already generating Oscar buzz. It is scheduled for release this fall. The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Tulane Law Professor, Dr. Robert St. Martin Westley. It is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the Louisiana State Museum and the Louisiana Museum Foundation. The screening and discussion (6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11) are free and open to the public.
